Malus domestica 'Granny Smith'

One of the most common apples grown for market is the tart and tangy Granny Smith. Named for Mariah Ann Smith, wife of apple farmer Thomas Smith, who found it as a sport in what is now Ryde, near Sydney, in Australia. Believed to be the daughter of discarded French crabapples, Granny Smith remains a world-wide phenomenon.
